The Atomium, a monumental icon that tells Belgium’s story in a different way

It is impossible to miss the Atomium, a futuristic silhouette that has become a national symbol since the 1958 Brussels World’s Fair. Originally designed as a temporary pavilion, this giant steel structure has endured through the decades to become a lasting icon, instantly recognizable in the heart of Brussels.

An engineering masterpiece born from Expo 58

Behind its monumental spheres lies a story deeply connected to the optimism and bold vision of the post-war years. The Atomium embodies a time when innovation, science and progress inspired great hope. Built to leave a lasting impression during Expo 58, it quickly became much more than a pavilion: a symbol of Belgian industrial expertise and of the country’s forward-looking spirit.

A spectacular rebirth and a modern visitor experience

After two years of renovation, the monument reopened in February 2006, brighter and more impressive than ever. Today, the Atomium shines both through its striking architecture and through the experience it offers inside. The visit provides one of the most beautiful panoramic views of Brussels, a wide and inspiring perspective that reveals the full scale of the capital.

Inside, the journey continues through a permanent exhibition retracing more than 65 years of history, from the original Expo 58 pavilion to the contemporary icon it has become today.

Digital art and immersive experiences

The experience continues with a programme that embraces the present. More than half of the visitor route is dedicated to temporary exhibitions focused on digital art. Sound, light and immersive installations transform the visit into an unexpected sensory experience. Some works—such as digital installations and the elevator enhanced by monumental artistic creations—invite visitors to look up, listen and truly feel the space.

Extending the experience

Just about 150 metres away, the entrance ticket also includes access to the Design Museum Brussels, dedicated to design from the 20th century to the present day and its evolution. It’s a perfect way to extend the discovery, continuing the same spirit of creativity and innovation just steps from the Atomium.

Nimbus est une œuvre inédite réalisée par Visual System pour les vingt ans de la rénovation de l’Atomium. Elle prolonge le dialogue unique que le collectif entretient depuis plusieurs années avec cette architecture emblématique et ses publics venus des quatre coins du monde. L’œuvre joue à bouleverser les géométries : les tubes originels du monument sont reconfigurés en colonnes gigantesques qui donnent naissance à un lieu vivant et habité, tandis que les sphères miroir, caractéristiques du bâtiment, se multiplient sur les parois et troublent les repères spatio-temporels. Nimbus compose un espace en suspension où lumière et son, portés par une composition musicale originale de Thomas Vaquié, forment un halo vibrant, une sphère refuge. L’audience dialogue avec une œuvre en évolution, créant une expérience singulière, plurielle et universelle par ses déplacements et sa sensibilité propre Nimbus célèbre ainsi l’architecture de l’Atomium, révélant un monument en métamorphose perpétuelle, où se rencontrent diversité, contemplation et imaginaire collectif.

Supply Chain mêle miroirs, écrans LED mobiles, faisceaux lumineux et dispositifs sonores pour créer une chorégraphie de lumière et de reflets. L’œuvre est composée de modules hybrides installés sur des structures issues de tables d’assemblage industrielles et complétée de tubes LED, d’un cercle lumineux central et de matrices graphiques. Elle transforme l’espace tout en évoquant les chaînes de production et d’approvisionnement qui sous-tendent les technologies contemporaines. À travers cette mise en scène poétique et dynamique, elle révèle les liens entre matière, industrie et numérique, invitant les publics / l’audience à ressentir une expérience sensorielle immédiate tout en questionnant les infrastructures invisibles qui façonnent nos sociétés technologiques.

ROTONDE est une installation lumineuse et sonore permanente, implantée autour de la coupole inférieure de l’Atomium. Une structure circulaire de lignes LED épouse l’architecture de la rotonde, tandis qu’un dispositif de down-lighting projette des faisceaux verticaux vers le sol, structurant l’espace à 360 degrés. L’installation se développe selon un cycle d’environ vingt minutes. Les mouvements lumineux, les descentes verticales et les variations d’intensité sont entièrement synchronisés avec une composition sonore originale, faite de rythmes subtils, de textures spatiales et de transitions finement travaillées. Certaines séquences sont volontairement minimales, presque immobiles ; d’autres introduisent davantage de mouvement et de contrastes. La programmation est conçue pour évoluer calmement tout au long de la soirée, installant une présence continue. Le projet est pensé comme une composition spatiale, développée spécifiquement pour cette partie de l’Atomium et pour le parcours des visiteurs. La lumière structure l’espace, souligne les lignes du bâtiment et amplifie sa présence nocturne, offrant une nouvelle manière de vivre l’architecture par le mouvement et le rythme. L’installation est conçue pour accompagner la vie de l’Atomium chaque soir. Elle donne à l’Atomium une identité nocturne, comme un lieu qui demeure actif, visible et habité en soirée. Elle s’inscrit dans une volonté de faire vivre le patrimoine architectural à travers la création numérique contemporaine. Conçue pour une durée minimale de douze mois, l’installation propose une lecture contemporaine de l’Atomium tout en plaçant l’architecture au centre.
