Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000, the Spiennes archaeological site is one of Europe's oldest and largest flint quarries. Dotted with thousands of pits, it spans 250 acres.
The pits dug by its Prehistoric inhabitants reached up to 16 metres in depth and required new techniques to extract the large slabs of flint, sometimes weighing several hundred kilos. The first human engineers, they also developed very ingenious flint cutting techniques.
Set in green countryside, the "Silex's" Spiennes Neolithic Mine Interpretation Centre offers visitors an in-depth insight into this internationally-acclaimed archaeological site.
