In the 7th century, Landelin alias "Maurosus", a notorious brigand, returned to the place of his misdeeds in the hope of seeing his faults redeemed. He converted to Christianity and founded Aulne a few leagues from Lobbes.
Initially a Benedictine monastery, Aulne was dependent on Lobbes and suffered numerous invasions. In 1147, it became part of the principality of Liège and became a Cistercian abbey, obeying the order of Clairvaux. From this period onwards, Aulne-la-Riche was in direct competition with Lobbes-la-Savante.
Discover the fascinating history of this abbey over the centuries! Today, long after the sacking of 14 May 1794, in the middle of nature, it is laid bare before you and reveals all its secrets...
